How to add discounting module in your backend – Technology behind coupon and deals

Discounts/offers/deals

This is something you see everywhere. Most of the companies are trying to allure their customer base by giving discounts. Indian startup space is nothing different. Companies give huge discounts to acquire new customers and retain them. But have you ever thought how the backend mechanism works for the coupon system? How is the technology sorted for the various types of offers or deals we see today? So, let me walk you through what it takes in term of technology to run a marketing campaign. And also, how to add coupons or deals or offers in your backend system.

Before starting to learn more about coupon system’s mechanism, let’s have a quick look on different examples of offers:

  • Flat Rs 100 off
  • Flat 10% off
  • Rs 50 cashback
  • 10% cashback
  • 10% flat discount + 10% cashback
  • T-shirt and Shorts @ Rs 600 Rs 500
  • Shaving free with Haircut
  • Drycleaning at just Rs 50 instead of Rs 100

 

Offer Types

  • Coupon code based
  • Combo
  • Complimentary
  • Special price for service

 

 

Offer Type 1 – Coupon Code

  • This will allow the backend user to generate coupon code which will/can have 3 functions:
  • Discount – This will be deducted from the total bill value while booking (either flat or percentage)
  • Cashback – This will credit points in user’s wallet which can be used in next booking user makes (either flat or percentage)
  • Discount + Cashback – This will give a flat discount for the current order and will add cashback in wallet.
    General procedure/criteria to add a coupon code in the backend system:
  • Name your marketing campaign – example: Diwali Special
  • Enter your coupon code – example: DIWALI
  • Select discount type – Discount or cashback or mixed
  • Select discount value type – flat or discount
  • Enter the discount value
  • Select customer type – is the coupon code applicable for first time user or returning user or for all users
  • Customer device – if you are present on multiple devices i.e web and mobile app, you can choose on which device will this offer apply.
  • Start date & end date of your campaign
  • Number of usage for coupon – how many times the a user can use this coupon like this offer is valid for first 200 customers
  • Number of usage for coupon per user – how many times a single user can redeem the coupon. Example: each user can use the coupon code thrice.
  • Minimum order value – minimum cart value on which the coupon code is eligible
  • Maximum discount value – this is the upper cap example Flat 10% off upto a max of Rs 50
  • Select sub-category and category – offer can be applicable on the entire catalogue or a particular category or sub-category

 

Offer Type 2 – Combo

  • Combination of services, sub-category or category
    • We can add multiple services/products and the price of combo is lesser than the sum of their regular prices
  • Parameters to be used:
    • Start date & End date
    • of offer usage
    • of offer usage per customer

Offer Type 3 – Complimentary

  • One service/product or services under sub-category or category will be complimentary with the other
    • Admin needs to select the primary service/product (s)
    • Admin needs to select complimentary service
    • System will take the price of the primary service(s)
    • We can use this offer where both primary and complimentary service will add in the cart. The price of primary service is shown and the price of complimentary service is 0.
    • Parameters to be used:
      • Start date & End date
      • Number of offer usage
      • Number of offer usage per customer

Offer Type 4 – Special Price for services/products

  • This is a part of service/product addition
  • So it reflects with the product – remember the SALE blurb? Generally on product listing page or product detail page.
  • We can add the discounted price of the product/service through the inventory management module
